Tips on How to Safeguard Your Bedroom Furniture from Your Pets

Most of us love pets and this love for them prompts us to let them inside our home.  However, the worst can also happen when we allow them inside as they can also destroy our furniture.  This is all the more worrisome if you let them inside your bedroom.

If you love your pet so much that you want him to stay with you in your bedroom, you need to employ some house rules for him.

Scold your pet the next time he lays on your bed.  Use varied tones so he will be able to differentiate if you are angry or not.  Avoid beating or whipping them.  Spraying some water on them is very effective to drive them away particular for cats.

Provide him his own sleeping space and let him understand that it is his own bed.  Use a blanket or a rug to keep him warm.  A crate would be ideal for dogs or have some enclosures.  See to it that he has adequate space to move about, as dogs love to do this.  The crate must be big enough for him so he can sit, stand and sleep.  Do not bother if he whines during the night.  He will soon relax and get used to sleeping on his crate.  Buy a cathouse if it is a cat that you have.  Cathouses normally have dividers so it can accommodate more than one cat.

To provide your cat a place where she can clamber, buy her a cat tree.  This will prevent her from gnawing and clawing on your furniture.

Buy toys for your pet to keep him busy.  Pets love to gnaw and claw on things.  The toy will divert his attention away from the sofa.

The best solution, nevertheless, is not to allow your pets to go inside your bedroom.  You can specify a certain area where he can stay in the living room and make him understand this.

Bathe your pet daily to remove any foul smell.  Groom him so he will not develop any skin disease.
Pets are like humans.  They need to be trained while they are still young.  If you do this, you will not encounter any problem of damaged furniture brought about by your pets loitering inside your home.

Different Kinds of Lights for Your Home

Choosing the proper lights for your home can give it a new look even without having to buy a new set of furniture.  Knowing the different kinds of lights to use will enable you to design your home appropriately.

The general lights refer to those that are installed onto the ceilings and walls.  Chandeliers fall into this category.

Task lights consist of table or desklamps as well as stand lamps.   The use of these lighting fixtures will help you avoid eye strain.

Accent Lights, as their name implies, are used to emphasize a certain object such as works of art, pictures, furniture or the fireplace.

The bulbs used for these lighting accoutrements vary and this is another element where they differ.  Depending on the bulbs used, you may either end up using more electric power or not.  Since a too radiant light is not often needed in the home, other lighting fixtures can have a faint glow.

The various light bulbs

Fluorescent bulbs are the most common.  Available in various shapes, sizes and wattages, they cost more when bought for the first time.  Nevertheless, they offer more savings with regards the usage of electricity.  They also live longer than other bulbs.  The only negative aspect is the inability to regulate their illumination.

Cost-efficient are Halogen bulbs, which are even cheaper than fluorescent and incandescent bulbs.   Halogen bulbs must be handled with care, though, as they tend to get too hot and can cause a fire if mishandled.  Fibers must not come in close contact with it.  Its heat can burn your skin.  Touching its glass can shorten its duration, which is an effect of the oil of the skin.

Tips on purchasing home lighting fixtures

Know the kind of light that you need.  If you want to emphasize an item, a reflector lamp would be a good choice because its wattage is lower.

Illuminate your inside and outside stairs, by buying bulbs with moderate brilliance.   It can also be used for your outer door keyhole.

To save more on electric expenses, purchase halogen lamps with dimmers.  They are very effective in establishing special effects.  You can also use decorative lighting accoutrements with high wattage for special events.

The wattage of the bulb used will determine the level of illumination in your home.  Employ various levels of brilliance for a better effect in your home.

Buffets Add Elegance in your Dining Room

Add elegance in your dining room with the presence of a buffet.  Useful and convenient, this piece of furniture serves you more than purpose.

Contemporary buffets are available in a myriad of styles and designs that can give you a hard time to decide which to choose.  When choosing, you must know your objective for buying.  If you just want it for display, then get a buffet that certainly is sophisticated and attractive.  You can find buffets that are exquisitely made of crocodile lacquer or fabric.  However, you can also settle for those that are more functional.

If you are in need of additional space for your precious china and other exclusive dining ware, then pick a buffet that offers plenty of storage space.  Such pieces of furniture have drawers and glass or wood-covered shelves.  The top can have a few decorative items or a nice flower arrangement.  The drawers can be used for cutlery, napkins or placemats.  Reserve the shelves for your china, glass and other delicate items.  Table runners or cloths can also be kept in one shelf for more order.

If you intend to use it for big gatherings, then pick a lengthier buffet.  This can be used as your serving table.  You can position it against the wall if you have a limited space.  On the other hand, you can also have some walking space from the wall and the buffet so your guests can move around it when serving themselves.  This is ideal for a bigger space and you can also put more food on it.

Nevertheless, always make certain that you buy a buffet that will complement the rest of your dining room furniture and furnishings.  You can also opt to have a luxurious-looking buffet for a conventional-styled dining room to perk it up.  Minimalist-style buffet can go well with a modern-themed room.

Adding a buffet in your living room will certainly be a welcome sight to see.

Rules when Buying Furniture

Furniture completes the style and design of our homes.  They add to the ambiance and the personality of each room as well as speak of our own individuality.

Buying furniture must be given utmost attention in order to get one that is suited to your home and your personality.  They are also one of our biggest investments in furnishing our home.

Here are some rules to guide you on buying home furniture.

The First Rule – Settle on how long you want the furniture to last.

Some homeowners settle on buying ready to assemble furniture when decorating their home, especially if they are just renting it out.  Their reason for doing so is they may not be able to bring the furniture with them if they decide to move home.  There is no doubt that these types of furniture are nice and useful; however, stylishness and stability can be best achieved by buying ‘real’ furniture.

The Second Rule – Get the dimension of the rooms, doors and stairs of your new home.

It would help you a lot if you can draw the floor plan on paper and note the measurements.  This will give you an idea of the appropriate furniture to buy.  Mark down the exact fitment that you want to position on a certain area and let it be your guide when you purchase furniture.  Base the size of your furniture from the measurements that you got.  Nevertheless, do not forget the appliances particularly in the dining room/kitchen.  If your new home has a staircase, note that the width of the steps or if it has any curves.

The Third Rule – Check and set a budget.

This is the ultimate thing to be considered.  Do not fall into debt just to buy the furniture that you saw from the shop or the internet.  You must know how to live within your means.  If your budget cannot accommodate buying new sets of furniture, then settle to having second hand ones.  Perhaps, some of your relatives are just waiting for someone to buy a sofa set that they no longer need.

You can also check online furniture stores, discount sales or garage sales.  Online furniture stores sells furniture that is cheaper compared to physical furniture shops, as they do not have high operating costs.  They similarly have discount sales most of the time.  You can also opt to buy second-hand fitment from your relatives.

Nevertheless, do not be afraid to purchase good quality furniture, as you have a few options on what to do with them in the event that you move house again.
  • you can bring the furniture with you and use it still.
  • sell them at a lesser price
  • do a good deed and give it your friends, neighbors or charity, or
  • just leave it
Follow the above rules and get the stress out of you when buying furniture.
