A Woman’s Living Room: A Preview

Most women go for fashion, style and comfort.  When they buy items, they see to it that it reflects their personality.  This is not just true in their choices of dresses and accessories; this also applies in their choice of furniture.  Check a woman’s living room and you would feel the feminine touch in it.

A central piece will not be missed in a woman’s living room much the same way when they dress.  Hence, they will choose an accent wall that will deliberately steal the onlooker’s attention or a coffee table that makes a difference or a painting, etc. depending on their preference.

A woman’s modern-themed living room may consist of contemporary sectional sofas with contemporary and clean structures that are angled or rounded in style.  A single bold color may be chosen.  It can also have two hues but the main color would be a brighter one.  Upholstered materials for sofas are good choices as it provides more comfort.  Choose from leather sofas or those made of microfiber or microsuede.  To get that luxurious appeal, pick modern sofas that made use of hardwood or metal.  To rest your tired feet after a hectic busy day, choose a lush ottoman in warm pink with metal feet.  Modern furniture would suit a woman’s fancy, as they are easier to pair with, functional and light.

The traditional type of furniture would suit women who still prefer some touch of conventionality in their living room.  Conventional sofas or sectionals were given new designs and styles without losing traditionalism.  Materials, designs and styles of traditional furniture offer durability, comfort as well as opulence, too.  Women who love arts would prefer this furniture for their intricate carvings.

Transitional furniture puts together traditionalism and modernity.  Bearing a touch of sophistication, transitional furniture offers comfort, simplicity as well as sturdiness.  Their main attraction is in the color and the straightforward structure.  These kinds of furniture combined both modern and traditional appeal in a living room.   Carvings on these kinds are simple that can still grab anyone’s fancy.

Rugs and throw pillow in soft colors or floral designs would complete the set up of her room.

Although some women would prefer a lavish-looking living room, most would prefer functionality in the room.  This is not confined to married women; even single women prefer furniture that offers usability.  Next to that is durability and most of all, would love to hear and see the admiring looks and encouraging words from their friends and family.

Using Furniture to Refurbish Your Man’s Living Room

Refurbishing your man’s living room must be done with great planning.  You cannot just go alter everything without considering his taste and how he would feel about it.  It may well be a good thing to know exactly what he wants prior to starting this project.

You can start with the walls of his living room.  Neutral colors as the base and blending it with other color tones are good alternatives.  Choose dark red or dark green for his accent wall and highlight it with metallic silver or gold for an urbane look.  Neutral tones on the larger walls can be used and complement it with another hue on the smaller walls.

Furniture for his living room

Choose sofas that are tough and masculine in looks.  The transitional type of furniture will be a good choice, as this does not incline to be feminine or masculine.  This type of furniture can serve both purposes.  Those made of leather materials are also ideal for a man’s living room.

Pair off his sofas with throw pillows that have animated hues but not too bright.  Instead of curtains, use wooden blinds for his windows.  The blinds will accentuate his living room’s accentuations without removing the interest from his room.

Have some walls shelves to show off his treasured collections.  This can be anything from minuscule wine bottles and goblets or glasses, tokens from his trips abroad, trophies from a sports he loves or plaques of recognition.

If he is a lover of art, then display them on his wall.  Alternatively, you can have his other passions like a poster of his favorite care or sportsman.

Do not forget to have a bar in his living room.  Modern furniture offers small bar set that can be positioned in a corner of the room.  Modern coffee tables have been designed offering provisions for bottles of wine.

Instead of putting his pictures on a frame, opt to have a digital frame.  This can have his pictures showing his triumphs whether in work, in sports or in other fields.
One more thing that you should not forget in his living room is the ottoman.  Men love to put their feet up while watching TV.
Refurbishing his living room only takes a little patience.  You can also invite him to join you, which can bring you closer to each other.  Remember though not to show much masculinity in the room.  Likewise, include a touch of compassion and concern so he will not appear cold to other people.  His guests will have to feel his gentleness the moment they enter his living room.

A Coffee Table for your Living Room

="

I got accustomed to having a coffee table in the living room. I still remember our old home where we have an all-wood furniture; however, the coffee table has a glass on top.

It was a useful piece of furniture for us --
- serving as a play table
- a work table where we do our homework
- a table where we put our snacks and drinks.

="

That is why I am surprised when I came into a home with no coffee table. This furniture is essential in every living room.

In choosing your coffee table, the following factors must be considered:

Establish where you want to position the coffee table. Although the normal place of this furniture is in the middle of the living room set and in front of the longest sofa, some put them on the side.

="

Modern furniture has come up with coffee tables, which can be placed on the side and was called end tables. Some may claim that end tables are for table lamps but if you are to evaluate it closely, they can also serve the purpose of being a coffee table.

Its size. The ideal length must be half the size of the longest sofa. There should also be a distance between the table and the sofa so you can move around. You do not want to bang your knees on the table, do you? Nor would you this to happen to your guests!

="

It is always sensible to get a longer coffee table as it is more functional.

Its style must match those of your current furniture. This explains the reason why a coffee table is included in a complete living room set – so that everything is in harmony.

="

Nevertheless, if you want your coffee table as an accent you can buy it separately. Buy a living room set without a table and look for a more intense-looking coffee table to match your set.

It shape. Various shapes are available to satisfy your preference. They come in round, rectangle, square, oval forms. Choose the shape that is appropriate for the space you have.

="

Its material. Wooden coffee tables are still very much in fashion. Alternatively, modern furniture created glass top coffee tables with steel frames. Glass top coffee tables can go with any kind of furniture. The downside is it can break easily and may pose danger with children and pets around. There are also coffee tables made from slate or plastic and marble for traditional Italian furniture.

So do not make your living room look bland because of the absence of a coffee table. Get one now and be practical in your choice.

Living Room Lights: How to Choose

="

Lighting is essential in a home. It provides the right mood for anything that you want to do as well as in perking up your spirits. The living room is one place where you need to choose lights appropriately aside from having comfortable furniture.

="

Letting the rays of the sun in our home is free so you must take advantage of it. With the sun’s illumination, there is no need for you to turn on the lights. It also brightens the room in another way, which is entirely different compared with lighting fixtures. It gives radiance keeping a fresher and bouncier feeling. Open your windows to let sunlight inside your living room (and in any room of the home). Use thin curtains especially during summer. You do not get this during winter, anyway, so let the sunshine in. Open the blinds if that is what you have for your windows.

="

Table and Floor lamps augments the spirit of your living room. They give a certain softness that gives the living room a feel of warmth, sweetness and harmony. Choose lamps that have a faint-color or white shade so the light can permeate the shade.

="

Mounted in cup-shape holes in the walls or ceiling are the recessed lights. Illumination given off by these illuminating fixtures is well distributed all over your living room. It looks like a narrowed spotlight as the radiance is directed downwards. These lighting fixtures can be bought in accent, muted, low and backlights.

="

To illuminate a certain area of your living room, make use of task lights. A small lamp can be used for this intention like a nook that is used for reading purposes.

="

Overhead lights or the central lights give off more luminosity. Fluorescent and the incandescent bulbs fall in this category. Although it is expensive (if you buy it for the first time), fluorescent bulbs are more cost saving as they last longer than incandescent bulbs. Chandeliers also fall in this category.

="

Installing lights in your living room must also complement the rest of your furniture and fixtures. Harmonizing your lights and furniture with the theme of your living room will project a more conducive atmosphere for relaxing, chatting, watching TV, playing card games or whatever family activity that you do in this room.

How to Have a Neat and Fresh Smelling Living Room

="

Since most homes do not have a separate room intended for formal gatherings, the living room serves these purposes. It becomes the family room and the living room at the same time. This is the reason why your living room needs to be neat and fresh smelling -- not only to impress your guests but the family too, for they also deserve to stay in an orderly room where the air is clean.

="

Keeping the living room neat and clean is a matter of organization and the desire to maintain its beauty. You may have the modern furniture and furnishings as well as striking wall decors, but if dust looms everywhere, it tarnishes the image of the room.

So how do you start your clean-up regimen?

="

Start with the floor. The type of floor that you have will determine the kind of tool that you will need. Marble and wooden floors are fine with sweeping and mopping. If you want them to have that additional sparkle, make use of a floor polisher. If your floor is carpeted, you naturally will need a vacuum. Do this every two days in a week at the most.

="

Dust your furniture. Ready all your cleaning stuff by placing them in a cleaning tool kit. Make sure you use the appropriate solutions that will not harm your furniture.
Wooden furniture can make use of liquid polish or paste wax.

="

For glass-top coffee tables, use the commercially sold glass cleaner or mix vinegar in a quart of water. Newspapers are very good in drying glass surfaces.

="

Antiques usually have a certain smell – that musky kind of scent. Put ground coffee in a tiny container and place it inside the shelves, drawers or cabinet. Leave it there for quite some time to get rid of the odor.

="

Have some plants. You can also go for flowers. Both will give the fresh look and smell of your living room. Be sure to water the plants though. On the other hand, you need to change the water of the flowers every 2 days or else you will invite mosquitoes to lay their eggs in the water. Get the dust off from the plants by using a banana skin. The juice of the skin nourishes the plant.

="

With a neat and fresh smelling living room, you are sure that not only will your guests appreciate it but also your family, most of all, will benefit from it.

Achieve Organization in the Living Room via Furniture

="

There are times that no matter how we clean and arrange things in our living room, we still cannot understand why it still looks topsy-turvy. Maybe a day or two, it will look organized; but then after a few days the clutter is back. Well, this cannot be helped since this room is where the family gathers together and if you have kids at home, they just leave their things at the sofa. Like if they wanted to read a book, and suddenly felt tired, they go lock themselves in their bedroom and that is why in a week’s time, the living room is a mess.

="

Now this can be prevented if your kids have learned organization. But even if they do, if there is not enough space to keep things, then the problem will continue.

="

And an untidy and chaotic living room is the least that anybody would want to have. If you suddenly have guests, then it is just a shame to let them see the mess.

To prevent this from happening, you need to provide storage spaces for small and big things and whatever stuff that is normally left on the sofa or on the coffee table or even on the floor.
Modern living room furniture is now built with this idea. Since the high cost of living had prompted most families to live in small homes, space is an absolute need for them. And even if the home provides more area, if there is not sufficient storage areas, then living room clutter will still be a problem.

="

Modern living room furniture can assist you with your storage space issue and here are some of them.

Modern sofas have built-in shelves where you can keep your magazine, cards, books, etc.

="

Modern coffee tables were built to provide storage areas. Some have pull-out drawers, swivels out to create an L-shaped design and can be shoved in for a smaller look. There are coffee tables that can be swiveled out of place so you can extend it to new reaches. Doing that, it will expose four storage units where things like remotes, pens, keys and other small items can be kept. There are also coffee tables that have sliding mechanisms providing you more space underneath its top. You will really be amazed and fall in love with these new designs.

="

If you do not want to buy a new coffee table and you have the usual table with open space, then get decorative boxes, baskets or plastic crates and place them beneath the table. These will hold more stuff in the living room such as kid’s toys, board games, books, magazines, etc. A tablecloth that touches the floor can be used to hide them from sight.

="

Modern ottomans also provide storage areas for DVDs, art supplies, magazines, books, etc.

="

Instead of the usual TV table, opt to have the modern TV stands. It may be a TV stand but they are now designed with drawers and shelves for other gadgets.

="

An entertainment center is another good choice. This modern furniture offers more storeroom for DVDs, remote, books, magazine and other decorations. You can even keep your cables out of sight. You also have a choice of material, glass or the ever reliable wood.

A magazine rack can also be had for your magazines and newspapers. Again, a pretty basket can also keep these items in place.

="

A book shelf is another great idea to have in your living room. It can keep books and other reading materials in place. Similarly, it can be used for other decorative stuff that you have.

="

For shoes and slippers that are scattered everywhere, you can have entrance storage for these stuffs. How can you do this? Get a bench with an open space under it to put these items.
Beside that bench, you can have a standing hanger where coats can be placed.

For umbrellas, get a rattan pot-like container but make sure it is not too wide. It will be better if it is a little bit tall, maybe 2 – 2.5 feet high.

="

Organization in the living room can be achieved if your furniture can afford to have dual functions. If you want to make use of your old furniture, then examine them closely to get them to full use. Otherwise, you can sell them and opt to get the modern furniture available in your local shops or online furniture stores.
